3D Printing: FDM or SLA or SLS Which is Right for You?

What is 3D Printing?

Imagine building an object layer by layer, using digital instructions instead of bricks and mortar. That’s essentially what 3D printing does! It translates a digital 3D model into a physical object by depositing material (plastic, metal, resin, etc.) in precise layers until the entire design is complete.

3 main technologies of 3D Printing

FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling):

FDM 3D printers build parts by melting and extruding thermoplastic filament, which a print nozzle deposits layer by layer in the build area or print plate. It works with a range of standard thermoplastics such as ABS, PLA, and their various blends. The technique is well-suited for basic proof-of-concept models, as well as quick and low-cost prototyping of simple parts.

Common Materials

PLA, ABS, PETG, Nylon, TPU

Suitable Applications
Prototyping, models, functional parts, tooling, fixtures, jigs, and low-volume production

SLA (Stereolithography):

SLA uses a laser to cure liquid resin into hardened plastic in a process called photopolymerization. SLA parts have the highest resolution and accuracy, clearest details, and the smoothest surface finish of all plastic 3D printing technologies.

Common Materials

Resins, such as general resin, high temp resin, hard-tough resin, abs-like resin, etc

Suitable Applications

Jewelry, dentistry, figurines, moulds, and high-detail part

SLS (Selective Laser Sintering):

SLS 3D printers use a high-powered laser to fuse tiny bits of polymer powder together. it is the most well-known technology in the additive manufacturing line. 3D printers use a high-powered laser to fuse small particles of polymer powder. The unfused powder supports the part during printing and eliminates the need for dedicated support structures.

Common Materials

Nylon, PA12

Suitable Applications

Jigs, fixtures, tooling, high-performance prototyping

Benefits of 3D Printing:

3D Printing offers several advantages over other manufacturing processes, including:

  • Speed and agility: No need for expensive tooling or long lead times. Print what you need when you need it.
  • Customization: Create unique and bespoke objects exactly to your specifications.
  • Design freedom: Print complex shapes and geometries that traditional manufacturing methods struggle with.
  • Reduced waste: Use only the material needed for your object, minimizing waste compared to subtractive manufacturing.
